In the past decade, women have made great strides to achieve their dreams in whatever endeavor they choose to pursue in their life. It has set examples and empowered other women with the confidence to follow their own path to success and reach their full potential. Of all the stories I’ve heard and observed throughout my career, here are 5 helpful tips to follow:
- Never stop learning
The world is changing every day with new discoveries or old information that is revised with what is current. Learning something new gives you a fresh perspective on what is relevant today. It also sharpens your skills in order to achieve promotions and the opportunities to advance in the workplace. Find the time to learn something new every day, whether it is taking a certification course or reading about new technology. There are various resources out there from your organization, online, books, forums, and even friends and colleagues. In doing so, you can build upon your current skills and open new doors that can benefit your career. Not only can it enhance your career but make a positive impact on your personal life. Learning something new can make you efficient in whatever you do outside of work such as giving you more confidence and making you a sharp thinker.
- Connect – Connect – Connect
Building relationships can get your where you need to be in your career. Whether it may be a colleague, a friend, or someone you just met briefly, it is important to interact with a variety of individuals in professional and nonprofessional settings. It can consist of introducing yourself to a mutual friend, initiating a conversation with someone sitting right beside you, or talking with your next-door neighbor. Every individual you cross paths with can help you in landing your dream job.
- Establish Goals
What are your goals for the day? What would the goal look like to achieve? How do you plan on getting there? Plan and create a list to follow for the day. Mark the ones that have high priority and the ones that have low priority. Planning helps keep you focused on what is important at hand. As an employer of an organization, you are utilizing your skills and time to accomplish the company’s mission and goal. Making an effort to reach the goal, shows that you care about your work and instills motivation to get things completed. Therefore, goal setting is imperative to achieve career success.
- Effective Communication
Communication is a vital tool in every business. It has significantly progressed with advances in technology and has led to various methods of interacting with people. It is also necessary if you want to establish strong relationships and complete tasks. Having great communication skills can motivate people to do their best, build stronger teams, and tackle challenges. However, bad communication skills can lead to missed deadlines, create uncertainty, and prevent an organization from reaching its goals. An important part of communication is active listening. Listening to what the person has to say, shows that you care and want to understand their needs. It also involves asking questions and clarifying any misunderstanding. Thus, having good listening skills helps to build trust. Another part of communication is being clear about what you want to say. Every day at work, there are circumstances that can interrupt the workflow due to a misunderstanding. Clarity involves constructing your thoughts and using the appropriate words so that it is concise and to the point. It also involves avoiding jargon and unnecessary verbiage that blurs the message. Asking questions about something that is unclear can help to ensure that everyone is on the same page. Through clarity, it can drive more productivity and get things done efficiently. Confidence can play a big role in effective communication. It involves body language, whether it is smiling, maintaining good eye contact, or bad posture. Taking note of these nonverbal cues can impact the way others perceive you. Communication is a key skill that takes time and effort to master but can make a big impact in the workplace.
- Stay Positive
The attitude you convey can have a significant impact on your career. There are moments of frustration or times when you want to quit because of an unfortunate circumstance. No matter the situation, it is important to keep a positive mindset. Positivity can come in the form of smiling when walking by someone or showing appreciation for a colleague’s effort on a project. Focus on your strengths or work on what you may be weak at to gain a positive perspective. Having a positive outlook will improve the way people perceive you and could help you succeed in what you do.
